Country information

Guatemala, with a population of over 15 million, is the most populated country in Central America. It has a broad indigenous culture, the legacy of the Mayan culture and Spanish colonization. Nearly 40% of the population are indigenous, with 21 groups of Mayan origin.

The climate is varied due to the country’s mountainous terrain, which gives rise to a wide variety of ecosystems, ranging from the mangroves of the Pacific wetlands to the cloudy forests of the high mountains. Problem issues

Illiteracy, malnutrition and poverty affect nearly 90% of the indigenous population of Guatemala, who live primarily in the rural areas. In these areas, nay children do not attend school or drop out either to help their parents in farming tasks or because their families migrate in search of a better life. The quality of the educational system is poor, characterized by precarious installations, a lack of resources and insufficient teacher training. Moreover, the lack of access to health services leads to high mortality and chronic malnutrition rates among the child population.

Water for People

Description

Many educational centers in Quiché lack basic water and sanitation services, a situation that negatively affects students' health. The lack of sanitary and hygiene installations leads to children to frequently catch illnesses, which also affects their attendance and has negative impact on their academic performance.

Given this situation, the project seeks to improve health conditions in the educational community, mainly through the construction of hygiene-sanitary facilities (latrines and hand-washing stations) in fifteen schools in the Santa Cruz del Quiché and Santo Tomás Chichicastenango municipalities, respecting the planning established with the municipal authorities and community leaders. This intervention gives continuity to the work we have been carrying out with Water for People over the last two years, during which time we have built 27 sanitary facilities in regional schools with the participation of the community.

In addition to establishing these infrastructures, the project also consists in an educational component to promote good hygiene and health habits among students, teachers and families.

Description

Poverty and poor dietary practices in the Chiché and Santa Cruz del Quiché municipalities seriously affects the nutrition of many families, and children in particular. In order to change this situation, the project aims to contribute to the safe food production and consumption among families through an environmentally friendly agriculture, and to improve dietary habits.

The initiatives include the creation of family food gardens, the installation of pig corrals for domestic use, the installation of irrigation systems and water filters for human consumption, and the construction of improved home cooking stations.

These improvements are accompanied by training workshops to ensure proper use. Awareness raising activities are also carried out to teach families good nutritional, hygiene, dietary and food handling practices.
As such, the project helps to guarantee food security to program participants by family-run domestic farms. In addition to producing healthy, nutritional food, the families can also increase their income by selling any surplus.

Description

In Guatemala, nearly a third of children who start primary school do not complete their primary education. The poor quality of education, poverty, migration and lack of awareness of the importance of children’s education lead many children to drop out of school.

The aim of the project is to improve the index of persistence to the last grade of primary school and to improve educational quality in 108 schools of Quiché, through academic reinforcement activities and working directly with parents’ associations and with teachers and school principals.

Literacy courses are offered to parents—many of whom do not know how to read or write—so that they can help their children do their schoolwork. Initiatives are also undertaken in encourage parents’ associations to participate in the local public education model. This way, families are directly involved in their children’s education and can contribute to improving their academic performance. School teachers and principals receive training to increase teaching quality.

Specific actions are also carried out to help families increase their income through the creation of Productive Units, so that they do not feel obligated to emigrate and so that their children do not miss school during long periods.
